Trusopt is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors (CAIs) work by decreasing the production of aqueous humor. They are available in oral and topical forms. The oral forms are acetazolamide (Diamox) and methazolamide (Neptazane). The topical form come in an orange colored top. They typically reduce the pressure from 15-20%. Side effects of the ocular drops include bitter taste and punctate keratopathy. Oral CAIs side effects include tingling in the fingers and toes, fatigue, loss of energy, and loss of appetite. Patients can also have a bitter taste when they drink carbonated beverages. Caution should be given if the patient has an allergy to sulfa. Topical drops include dorzolamide (Trusopt), and brinzolamide (Azopt).
