The bulb in an old school projector is surrounded by a reflector (see image). You can see from the photos that removing the reflector shows the bulb. When the bulb is on, light goes to the left in the images. The bulb can get dirty on one side. Simply rotating it 180 degrees will allow the light to go through unobstructed and the chart will become more bright. Once this side gets dirty, the bulb will have to be replaced.
